You know when you were a child, and you couldn't have something and you'd said, "Fine. I didn't want that anyway"?
How do you know that you're actually content with being a part of the mid-tier, and not just using that as a way of consoling yourself when success doesn't eventuate. Asking for a friend...
Personally that shifts .. if we say it’s earning loads of money from doing the thing you love full time, for a lot of people in commercial music the goal posts constantly shift, and the pressure can increase once things get going, it can be equally hard to enjoy the moment up there
For a lot of musicians in my personal circles the goal isn't fame or riches, but just being able to pay the rent by being a full time artist and not needing a "real job". These are some of the people I idolize for their artistry, and maybe I fell victim to the phenomenon you touch on, where you start wanting what they want.
But then I keep coming to the conclusion that I don't actually want that, and that I enjoy the freedom of being a hobby artist, making whatever music I want and when I want, because my artistic output won't impact on my livelihood. I'll just go with that for now, lol
